Questions You Must Ask Your Car Technician

We usually take the time to find the right doctor for ourselves. These doctors will most likely be poking us around, so it is still best to find one that we can trust. This same psychology should be applied to finding the right doctor for your car. Choosing the right repair shop can save you a lot of trouble, time, and of course, money. To avoid the pressure of having to find the right repair shop when your car badly needs one, the recommended course of action is to find one right after you obtain a vehicle. It is also wise to ask around for recommendations of repair shops or technicians that your trusted friends or relatives trust. Choosing a repair shop should not be a rushed decision; rather, it should be an informed, intelligent one.

In some dire circumstances, you may be forced to bring your car in at the nearest service station or the first repair shop you see. This is okay if you are experiencing car troubles while you’re driving, and your repair shop is too far. Just don’t get anything fixed. Have your car checked, and based on the diagnosis, arrange for your car to be moved to your real repair shop.

In finding the right repair shop, you have to be as meticulous as if you’re choosing a pediatrician for your baby, or a surgeon for an operation. The biggest mistake you can probably ever commit in trying to find the right repair shop is settling for the cheapest one. If you really need your car, money should not be that much of an issue. It is still an issue, but settling for the cheapest repair shop is suicidal.

To shed some light into the issue, here are some questions that should be answered before the repair shop passes the trustworthiness test. The first question to ask, of course, is whether the repair shop is capable of performing the required repairs, for your particular car model. Do they have up-to-date training and equipments that are needed for the specific repair and for the specific car in question? Next, ask about the expense. If you received an estimate over the phone, don’t trust it accuracy that much. Ask the repair shop how much the real expense can deviate from the estimate. Don’t expect over-the-phone estimates to be accurate, especially if the repair shop haven’t even seen and checked your car in actual. Ask about any additional charges as well. Next, ask about their technicians. Do they have certifications such as the Automotive Service Excellence seal? These certifications indicate that the technicians have the basic knowledge, skills, and competencies needed to repair your car. It is also better if the certification is recently obtained, since car technology receives regular updates. Aside from the certifications of technicians, also ask about the licenses of the repair shop. Next, ask about other services they may offer. Do they pick your car up and deliver it? Will they be able to give you a ride to and from work on the day of the repair? These are some services that you can be entitled to, so make sure you ask about them. Next, ask about the full 51-point inspection that should be offered for free. A trustworthy repair shop should offer this to cover any potential problems. Aside from that, you should also ask about warranties. Look for a repair shop that will honor your car’s warranty. Also, ask about the 12-month or 12,000-mile warranty for the repair. Finally, it is best to ask about satisfied customers and testimonials, if you can. A reliable repair shop will definitely be proud to show you a list of happy, long-term customers.

Cars are valuable investments. Surely you planned on having a car for a long time, so make sure you take good care of your vehicle and entrust it to a repair shop that deserves to be trusted and paid for a reliable service. Find the best and the right repair shop. Take time to shop around, and don’t just settle with any repair shop you come across with. Chances are, your total repair expense will just balloon when you’d have to go for another repair if a bigger problem is caused by your faulty decision.
